| West Malvern | | 2:08pm Tuesday 22nd April 2008 | | THERE has been an excellent response to the appeal in the current edition of the Hills Echo for volunteers to join the Friends of Adelaide House who for nearly 30 years have been regularly visiting and organising events for residents of West Malvern's Red Cross care home for the elderly. It was feared that the group might have to wind up because of diminishing numbers and increasing age of committee members. However no fewer than six people have already come forward showing an interest in helping with this valuable work, and there are now lively hopes that The Friends may be revitalised and continue their activities. Anyone interested in taking part should contact Margaret De Bartolomé on 01684 574398. |

| West Malvern | | 12:43pm Wednesday 16th April 2008 | | PROBABLY the biggest attendance ever for a West Malvern Parish Council event turned out for the Annual Parish Meeting on Monday. Main focus of interest was the presentation, more fully reported elsewhere in this issue of the Malvern Gazette, by the Elim Pentecostal Church. Its General Superintendent John Glass and other senior staff members outlined plans to move its world headquarters and the Regents Theological College into the former St James's School premises next year. It was as well that the meeting was held (at Elim's invitation) at Anstruther Hall, as the village hall could not have held the estimated 150 people present. Also reported elsewhere is the update by Police Sergeant Sarah Goodman on the recent spate of vandalism in the northern part of West Malvern Road. Despite a DNA test on some blood found on a vandalised car, and the installation of a security camera (subsequently found to be linked to a faulty computer system) no arrest had yet been made. But Sergeant Goodman, who was accompanied by new local officer PC Wendy Saunders, emphasised that investigations were continuing and that the police were determined to get to the bottom of the affair. |

| Powick | | 11:50am Wednesday 16th April 2008 | | LAST Wednesday 15 members of Powick Ramblers plus three dogs (Tilly, Digby and Monty) ventured into Herefordshire. They found the footpaths well marked, part of them following the Worcestershire Way. Leaving The Wheatsheaf Inn at Whitbourne, the path led through fields and woods, up some steep slopes onto Bringsty Common. The newly re-furbished Live and Let Live on the Common was admired and views across to Abberley and Ankerdine HIlls and the Malverns were seen through the bright sun. The path then crossed the Bromyard Road past Home Farm and the Old Mill Cottage following the Sapey Brook past Whitbourne Hall and lake. It went through the farm track past cows and their calves back to The Wheatsheaf Inn. It was good to have Garth Lowe identify the different bird songs. Joy and Phil were thanked for leading the five mile walk and refreshment was enjoyed in the pub. The next walk is on Thursday, April 24 meeting at 10am at the Knapp and Paper Mill nature reserve car park with a view to seeing the first bluebells. For details ring Phil and Joy on 01886 832774. |

| Longdon | | 11:25am Wednesday 16th April 2008 | | ON Saturday, April 12, a coffee morning was held at Longdon Vicarage in aid of St Richard's Hospice. About 50 people packed into the lounge to hear Michael Harper, Medical Director at the Hospice, speak about the work there. Everyone listened with great interest to Michael, as he spoke about the first hospices and how they evolved into the excellent service we have now. He talked about how his faith impacted on his work, leading him to work in palliative care, and it was obvious that he really enjoys his work and has great care for the people he helps. A total amount of £277.70 was raised at this very enjoyable morning. There were several raffle prizes, an enormous amount of cakes to buy and it was lovely to see people meeting each other from across the benefice. |
| West Malvern | | 3:08pm Wednesday 9th April 2008 | | KEEN interest and a larger-than usual attendance is expected at the Annual Parish Meeting on Monday, to be held at the Anstruther Theatre on Westminster Bank, at the invitation of the Regents Theological College who will be moving into the former St James's School premises next year. The hall will be open from 6.30pm to allow residents to meet staff and view information displays. The meeting proper will commence at 7pm and will include a presentation about the college and its plans to move to West Malvern. As well as the usual brief reports by parish, district and county councillors there will be a talk by local police - likely to attract some interest following recent problems in the village. |
