Upton
Lanterns project will embody community spirit
A LOTTERY-funded project aims to unite people of all ages in Upton by asking them to make lanterns.
Upton Community Pride and the Upton Tourism and Trade Association have enlisted the help of Toozali Community Arts with the aim of producing brightly-decorated lanterns to be hung around the town during festivals and at Christmas time.
The project has financial backing from the Lottery Awards for All' scheme as well as Worcestershire County Council. Starting this summer a series of workshops will be held around the town, with the aim of having the first lanterns complete for the Water Festival on August Bank Holiday weekend, and a full set available for the town's churches to use in their candlelit carol parade on Saturday, December 13.
Tourism and Trade chairman Peter Webb said the idea stemmed from last year, when children produced silk banners for the summer festivals before the town was hit by the summer floods.
"One of the lasting impressions of last summer, as the river rose and the rains lashed down and the flood began to become inevitable was that of those colourful silk banners," he said. "Somehow they seemed to defy the elements and pronounce the spirit of Upton. They would not be washed away nor would their cheerful colours be dimmed, and like Upton they did survive."

It wasn't only children - community groups of all ages took part in making the flags.
