Scouts all set for parade

THIS weekend Upton's Scouts have the honour of hosting the annual St George's Day Parade for the entire Malvern District.

Around 400 youngsters are expected to line the streets on Sunday (April 20), for a parade starting at the Old Fire Station, in New Street, at 2.30pm.

Scouts, cubs and beavers from groups across the district will parade to the Upton playing fields for an open air service, before returning to the old fire station.

Only a year ago Upton's Scout troop was fighting for survival, due to a lack of assistants to support leader Mervyn Howells.

But after a successful appeal in the Malvern Gazette more came forward, and scouting in Upton is going from strength to strength.

The town's Cub troop has now been relaunched, and currently boasts a very healthy 27 members, and a Beaver leader has been identified with the hope of relaunching that group in September.

Mr Howells is delighted to be hosting the St George's Day parade, and hopes it will raise the profile of scouting in Upton even further.

"We'd like lots of the public to come and watch, and perhaps we can even attract some more leaders from it," he said. "The more leaders we have the more flexibility we have, and the more we can offer to the children."
