Drains to be dealt with as part of flood prevention work

A NEW team has been set up to map out and deal with land drainage problems as part of Malvern Hills District Council's continuing response to last summer's floods.

From next month the authority will be building a detailed picture of land drainage across the district in order to better understand brooks, ditches, culverts and similar small watercourses.

The initiative will also play an important role in the development of a land ownership database which will record who is responsible for ensuring that ditches and drains are kept clear and in good working order.

Particular problem areas will be identified and risk-assessed so that the council can begin to work with landowners and deal with any potential issues.

The announcement has been welcomed by David Brierley, and his wife, Sue. Their Tanhouse Lane-based home has been flooded on several occasions because of drainage issues. They moved back into their home just last month following the summer floods.

Mrs Brierley said: "A lot of the flooding problems are caused by poor drainage and it is good news that the district council is doing something about this.

"Work has been done on the system outside our home, and so far this year it has been OK, but there are plenty of other areas that need looking at."

Councillor David Watkins, responsible for environmental control at MHDC, said: "This work will greatly enhance the activity qw already undertake to address problems with land drainage.

"At present the speed with which we can resolve land drainage problems is often dictated by the time it takes to identify and contact responsible land owners.

"Building up a comprehensive picture of land drainage responsibilities across the district will allow us to deal, more effectively and more swiftly, with problems as and when they occur."

The work is set to be carried out throughout 2008 and parish councils will be asked to participate, along with other organisations and groups that have essential local knowledge and experience.

I fully expect this to backfire on the landowners who have , for many years , treated drainage ditches as an extension of the plot and used then to dump everything from oil drums to grass clippings . One can but hope!
