I WAS delighted to return to Malvern for the launch of a new festival celebrating song, poetry and landscape last weekend.
St Edmunds Hall proved to be an ideal venue for the launching of Malvern Songfest, which was the inspiration of Malvern resident William Coleman who also performed at the concerts, along with the soprano Helen Massey and tenor Peter Wilman and accompanists Phillip Collin, Lyndall Dawson and Robert Challinor.
The programmes were carefully balanced to include settings of poetry from some of our outstanding poets by English composers from Purcell to the present day and included a number of world premières by Ian Venables, Edward Nesbit and Malvern's own Elaine Hugh-Jones. The audience was small but very appreciative, the atmosphere friendly and relaxed, the performances beautifully polished and I am sure I am not alone in hoping that this will become another annual event like the excellent Autumn in Malvern Festival!
