I WOULD have thought that Councillor John Raine, would have found out what a cafe society was before writing his letter, published in last weeks edition of the Malvern Gazette, on St George and the dragon. To add flippantly 'whatever that is' shows his disdain for the idea.

Upton marina

Parasol debate

THE Directors of Pepper & Oz Ltd. pose the question as to whether the dragon, symbolising Malvern councillors and planning officials, has really been slain following the decision of the planning committee to approve their parasol.

Rubbish collections

COMMENTING upon the audit commission's annual report local media picked up upon the fact that MHDC's recycling and household waste collection is amongst the best in the country. It therefore begs the question of why is the current MHDC Tory administration currently considering reneging on their manifesto pledge to keep the weekly household waste collections. If they go for fortnightly collections thereby breaking their promise the electorate across the whole MHDC area will not forgive them and they have long memories.

THE staff in the physiotherapy department at Ledbury Community Hospital would like to take this opportunity to thank the League of Friends of Ledbury Hospital for their generosity in buying some new blinds for the windows of our department. This has given us privacy for our patients, but still allowed natural light into the department.

St George and the Dragon

SO the proprietors of Pepper & Oz now cast themselves (along with the people of Malvern) as St George, and the planners and councillors of Malvern Hills District Council as the dragon, following the outcome of the latest round of the purple parasol saga. (Malvern Gazette, Your Letters, April 25) Well of course everyone is entitled to their view. But, hang on a minute is not the one half of team St George the same Pete Brown who, until recently donning his apron at Pepper & Oz, was himself a senior council official (dragon?) as head of waste management at the County Council - making and implementing all the many rules and constraints on what the good citizens might and might not do with their rubbish and recycling? He, of all entrepreneurs, ought to understand and respect the important role that public regulatory bodies like council planning departments and English Heritage play in protecting and enhancing the quality of life and character of places like Malvern.
