CHASE head Kevin Peck this week called for schools in Worcestershire to be treated fairly when belts are tightened as cuts in public spending bite.

He was speaking at the school's prizegiving ceremony on Wednesday (December 16), at which the guest speaker was Tracy Moseley, Malvern’s downhill mountain bike world cup champion.

Mr Peck said he recognised that schools cannot be exempt from cuts, and the challenge that the Chase faces is to maintain the quality of education it offers when funding is much reduced.

He said: "Schools cannot be exempt from the belt-tightening we are all going to have accept. I would also concede that there is always room for greater efficiency and the reduction of waste. But there is one plea I would make and that is for fairness in the campaign to bring the nation’s expenditure within its income.

"In a poorly funded education authority like Worcestershire, the cuts associated with such things as the increase in national insurance costs will bite much more deeply than in authorities which have been used to more generous funding over many years."

Mr Peck said that this year, the school's GCSE results matched the school's previous bets performance in 2007, and A level results were also pleasing.

"These results were once more a tribute to the collective efforts of students, staff and parents and deserve to be celebrated without the usual carping debate about standards. All students and teachers can do is to prepare to the best of their ability for the assessments set by the examining boards now. Improved results over time demonstrate that students and staff are working harder together and preparing for the exams they are set more effectively each year and this should be unquestioned cause for congratulations all round," he said.
