IT was good and bad news for primary schools in and around Malvern with the publication of the latest round of performance figures.

Among the winners were Callow End and Leigh and Bransford, which topped the scores in the area with 93 per cent each, Malvern Wyche, Malvern Wells and Hanley Swan and Leigh and Bransford, all of which got scores well above average.

Sarah Wilkinson, head of Callow End, said: "We're a very small school but we have high ambitions for our children.

"We're incredibly proud of the work our children, and our staff, have put in. We've got a very strong ethos and we welcome the children, build their confidence and make sure they are fully prepared."

Start Bill, head of Leigh and Bransford, said; "We're very very pleased. The pupils really worked hard with some very difficult tests. I'm very proud of the work of the staff and the support from the parents.

"It has taken very very accurate and measured teaching right from Year R to Year 6 to prepare the pupils for these exacting tests."

But it was less happy for St Josephs RC Primary, which scored only 25 per cent and was branded well below average.

The Department for Education says the standard is the same as last year, with attainment set at 65 per cent of pupils meeting the expected standard in the reading, writing and maths in the KS2 Sats and the progress scores set at -5 in reading, -5 in maths and -7 in writing.
