POLICE have issued warnings to stay safe whilst driving in wet weather.

With the wet weather set to continue, drivers are warned to check their tyre pressures and tread depth regularly, ensure breaks are working, top up oil and water levels if required and replace wiper blades if they are not in good condition.

Officers also remind motorists to check lights and indicators are working as well as making sure registration number plates are kept clean and clear.

Police say to use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, generally when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet).

Drivers may also use front or rear fog lights but they must be switched off when visibility improves.

Motorists should double the distance they leave from the car in front, as stopping distances are increased by wet roads.

If steering becomes unresponsive due to the rain, ease off the accelerator and slow down gradually.

• Turn off cruise control and drive to the conditions of the road and try to avoid driving through lying surface water as you might flood your engine.

Try and find an alternative route and avoid driving through the flooded area and if in doubt, don't drive through the flooded area or if a driver has to, use first gear and keep revs high.

Breaks should also be tested after passing through water.
