A PIECE of Malvern's history has been restored to public view with the opening of the town centre's newest shop.

While Nigel and Sara Morris were restoring the shop on the corner of Church Street and Graham Road for their latest venture, Rhubarb Home, they uncovered a tile mural dating back to when a fish and poultry seller occupied the premises.

The tile mural, which the couple have made into a feature of their new shop, appropriately depicts fishing boats out at sea.

Mr Morris said: "We had no idea it was there when we took the unit on, but we're delighted to have uncovered it. It was created by Carter and Co of Poole who are famous tile makers.

"The shop was opened up by 'Fishy' Davies in the early 1900s, and it was still a fish shop until the 1960s, when it became an electrical shop.

"We've had some people in who remember it as a fish shop in the 1950s, they remember coming in with their parents and seeing it."

Mr and Mrs Morris have also restored to view the building's cellar, lined with white glazed bricks and with a brick floor.

"It was only accessible through a hatch, but we put in new stairs and it's now part of our showroom. People are amazed when they see it," he said.
