A LOCAL 'legend' was chosen to turn on the town's Christmas tree lights less than 48 hours after becoming an online sensation.

It all started when Katherine Brooks thanked Edwin Hardman for making her smile everyday in a Facebook post on Upton Parish Notice Board.

The post received more than 700 likes and over 150 comments after it was posted on Wednesday, November 16.

As a result Annette Keyworth, of Upton Business Association, invited Mr Hardman to turn on the Christmas lights with the Mayor on Friday, November 18.

The 48-year-old, who lives in Upton, has also been given free drinks and is amazed by the outpouring of appreciation.

The part-time cleaner said: "I don't believe this is all happening. I haven't got a clue why people want to celebrate me.

"Everyone recognises me. I walk my eight-year-old cocker spaniel, Billy, nearly everyday and wave at everyone.

"I walk my dog at 8.15am after cleaning in Upton Library. I don't have a phone, I don't need one. I just see people in person.

"I believe you should treat people with respect and always be friendly. I picked it up as I grew up."

Sarah Fletcher, 44, who works as a teaching assistant at Upton Primary School, said: "Every morning he's out walking his dog smiling to everyone.

"He's even smiling to me now. He's such a kind and gentle person. Why shouldn't he turn on our Christmas lights?"

Kyle Hassall, owner of The Boathouse in Upton, said: "He was our first customer when we opened in 2014.

"Because I'd seen the comments on Facebook I gave him two pints on the house on Friday, he deserves it.

"The whole town has been talking about him. He comes in every Friday night at 10pm and has two pints of Stowford."

Mr Hassall said Edwin often helps them move furniture and clean up after functions and asks for nothing in return.

"He knows everybody, he will always help you out, he's got time for anyone and he waves at everyone," he added.

The 30-year-old said he has never seen Edwin in a bad mood and that he has been invited to their Christmas staff party.

Katherine Brooks said: “I am so surprised that so many people liked it! I never expected that to happen for a minute!

“It just speaks for itself how well liked and respected Edwin is in Upton. He used to wave at me when I was 10, riding my pony around Upton, and he still waves to me now I'm 42!!

“He's never changed, he's always got time for everyone, such a great bloke. My three children adore him, they wave to him and Billy every day on the school run!

“Edwin cheers everyone up every single day come rain or shine, and I just think he deserves to know. I just can't believe he waves at over 800 people! He's a legend!”
