WITH just days to go until the official switch-on of Malvern Rotary Club's Tree of Light, organiser are inviting all to the event at Malvern's Priory Park on Monday at 6pm.

This is the 14th year that the club has held its Tree of Light campaign, which serves the dual purpose of providing a remembrance of loved ones and raising funds for good causes. Over the years, it has raised over £120,000 for a variety of beneficiaries.

Michael Barraclough of the club said: "Over the last two weeks we listed the two main charities, Macmillan Cancer Support and ACORNS Children's Hospice that we will support this year.

"As well as these, the club raises money in a number of different ways which is donated to other good causes. This week we summarise these other beneficiaries.

"Over the years the club has played its part in supporting the Rotary International campaign to eradicate polio throughout the world. This highly successful campaign has resulted in there being only two countries left in which the disease is still endemic.

"This year we have also supported Kaleidoscope, a charity based in Malvern, to help rehabilitate handicapped children, and further afield in association with the local Farmers Overseas Action Group we have provided sacks of clothing which are transported to Uganda and sold by local women to allow their children to attend school.

"Whenever there is a disaster we aim to provide support. For overseas events we support a UK organisation which provides emergency Shelterboxes to those rendered homeless.

"Other organisations supported include the Hope and Homes for Children and Mercy Ships. The latter has a hospital ship which undertakes medical procedures for such ailments such as cataract operations.

"Your donations will go to all these worthy causes in the knowledge that the funds will be delivered directly to those on the ground doing the work.

A list of donors and lives remembered will be displayed in Malvern Theatres, Rotary's website and in the Malvern Gazette.
