COLWALL'S heritage of apple-growing will be celebrated this weekend with a day of family fun and games in the village's community orchard.

Colwall Apple Day, on Saturday, October 22, will include the chance to bring your own apples and make them into juice on the spot.

Helen Stace of the Colwall Orchard Group which is organising the event, said: “Fresh apple juice has a fantastic zingy flavour, which varies according to the varieties being pressed.

"We generally make a mixed juice, but will do some single variety pressings if we get enough of any one sort. We also juice pears if anyone has enough to make a batch. If you have lots, let us know so that we can book you in."

The day, which starts at 1.30pm, also includes games such as grapple the apple, and the apple catapult, and there will also be an apple piñata, apple printing and the chance to make an apple bird feeder to take home, plus apple variety identification.

There will be a pop-up cafe in the new Orchard Room at the Apple Packing Shed, serving delicious fresh apple juice, teas, coffee and cakes.

Mrs Stace said: "Over the last year, we have restored the Apple Packing Shed, retaining the original chestnut boarding on the outside, but refurbishing the structure and creating a cosy, dry space on the inside. Many thanks go to the donors who helped to fund the restoration, and to Ridgewood Construction for their excellent work."
