Approximately 110 ltrs of hydraulic fluid spilt and spread across a three mile stretch of the carriageway.
A specialist team dealt with the incident, but drivers faced long delays of several hours.
Road users were advised to follow the "Hollow Triangle" diversion symbols exiting the M5 at J5 then take the 4th exit on to the A38.
Drivers were also advised to allow extra time for their journey.
Traffic was already slow northbound because of an earlier accident.
Good evening, A unit on with you tonight. M5 closed J5-6 south due to spillage. Please monitor Highways England for updates.
