MEMBERS of Women's Institute groups in the Malvern area celebrated the organisation's centenary by helping pass a specially-made WI baton across the district.

The baton began its journey on January 1 on Anglesey, where the first WI meeting was held in 1951, and will finish its trip at the WI's annual meeting in June 2015 at the Royal Albert Hall.

Worcestershire Federation chairman Christine Hickman-Smith received the baton from the Herefordshire branch at the county boundary at British Camp, where it was then taken by bike to Belle Vue Terrace.

Members of local groups, some in costume, then carried the baton of foot through Priory Park to Great Malvern railway station, where they enjoyed tea and cakes at Lady Foley's tea room.

The baton was then whisked off in style in a Morgan sports car to Upton, where it was handed to members of the WI Severn group, who took it by riverboat to Tewkesbury.
