Bloom bid will need more help, say organisers

AS the dust settles on another successful and enjoyable judging day in the Heart of England in Bloom competition, concerns over the future of the hugely-successful Upton in Bloom operation have emerged.

The Upton in Bloom committee this week voiced fears that it will be impossible to maintain the impeccably high standards the town has set in recent years unless more help comes forward.

“The majority of the committee have been dedicated to Upton in Bloom for eight years and have failed to attract new recruits to help share the burden,” explains a statement released by the committee. “Despite the help of our ‘Friends’ we are all feeling that the committee, as it stands, is unable to continue to maintain the high standard that we have always achieved without the injection of fresh and willing helpers.

“Several of the committee will be resigning at the annual general meeting in October and without new members it will not be possible for the remaining stalwarts to continue.”

The committee are currently waiting to discover how it has fared in this year’s Heart of England in Bloom competition following the visit from judges Robin Russell and Angela Pendleton earlier this month.

They are hopeful of repeating their Gold award success of recent years when the results are announced at a ceremony in Newcastle under Lyme in September.

“Thanks to the efforts of many volunteers and the local authorities, the town looked clean and tidy and the floral displays at their best,” said chairman Jackie Surtees. “The committee would like to thank everyone who helped prepare for judging, all those who have helped throughout the year and local hostelries for providing a superb buffet for the judges, which was held in the Tudor House Museum.”
