MORE than 100 runners, as well as a cyclist and four dogs, braved the elements including wind, snow, hail and rain on Sunday to help survivors of the Haiti earthquake.
Running for Survival, organised by Malvern Joggers, saw runners taking on one or more of the 2.85 mile legs of the 10-hour relay, a challenging 650-foot climb from the Chase Inn in Upper Colwall to the Worcestershire Beacon and back.
And the event was a great success, raising more than £2,000 to buy ShelterBoxes containing vital survival equipment.
Steve Ollis, the mastermind behind the event, said: “The support for the event and peoples’ generosity with sponsorship surpassed all our expectations. We are delighted to announce that to date we have raised more than £2,000 and there is more sponsorship coming in.
“This amazing result would never have been achieved without some incredible teamwork driven by a common desire to provide some relief to Haiti. We are particularly indebted to the Rotary Club of Colwall whose members marshalled the relay for 10 long hours and helped us to raise sponsorship and to the Chase Inn who provided the perfect venue for a checkpoint and who supplied endless refreshments to our tired runners.”
Malvern Joggers initially hoped to raise enough money for two ShelterBoxes to Haiti, but they now hope to buy five.
Mr Ollis said “The challenge captured peoples’ enthusiasm to the extent that there is already talk of repeating the exercise next year.”
