Village post box blown up by firework

THE door was blown off a village postbox after a firework was planted inside.

Castlemorton resident Matt Weaver heard a loud bang on Saturday evening (November 1) but assumed it had just been someone letting off a firework nearby.

However when he went to post a letter in the Castlemorton Common postbox on Monday morning he was shocked to find it in a state of “total devastation”.

The post box had been emptied just a few hours before the incident and Royal Mail spokesman Tom Prendergast said there were no reports of any letters being damaged.

“The door has been blown off the box and the sides are cracked so it will have to be replaced. We will have to order it so it will take a while,” he said. “Acts of vandalism involving fireworks are relatively few but where they do happen we take them very seriously. Every item of mail is important to us and we would encourage anyone with information about these incidents to contact the police.”

Mr Prendergast added that if there were any damaged items, where possible they would be forwarded on to the addressee in a bag with a letter explaining what had happened. Any customers with concerns can contact Royal Mail on 08457 740740.

The postbox is widely used by elderly residents, and it is not the first time there have been problems with it.

“A couple of years ago it was stolen completely, and we had to wait an age for a replacement,” said Mr Weaver. “People think it is very quiet up here on Castlemorton Common of an evening but that is not always true.”
