POLICE are warning householders to be on the alert after a burglar broke into a Malvern house thanks to a cat flap.
The incident took place in Cowleigh Road between 10pm on Tuesday (September 30) and 7.15am the next day.
It is thought the offender reached through the cat flap and got the door key from a nearby work surface to unlock the door.
Around £156 in cash, an Alliance and Leicester Visa card, a purse and the door key were all taken.
PC Paul Chadd said: “We would like to warn people who may have cat flaps to always remove any keys from door locks or nearby surfaces.
“This advice also stands for people without cat flaps as keys should never be left on view in any circumstances. However, if they are left within reach of a cat flap they are much more appealing to an opportunistic thief.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Chadd on 08457 444 888, quoting 73/S/0111008. Information can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
