Tracy loses locks for cancer care charities

A WOMAN’S hair is often described as her crowning glory.

However, for Tracy Smith and her mother Di, these concerns have had to be pushed aside as Di, who is a grandmother of four, faces a drawn-out battle with breast cancer.

With 54-year-old Di’s hair loss brought about by the chemotherapy treatment she is currently undergoing at Worcestershire Royal Infirmary, Tracy has decided to honour her mother by allowing hairdressers at Ginger’s Salon to shave off her own locks too.

Friends and well-wishers, including The Lamb Inn and the British Legion, have been generous in their sponsorship of Tracy’s show of support, and so far she has raised over £450, which she plans to divide between Marie Curie Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support charities.

However, Tracy, aged 25, intends her campaign to have a wider significance in bringing what she terms the “hush-hush” issue of breast cancer “out into the open”.

She said: “In raising awareness in this way, I hope to break down the stigma and ignorance attached to all types of cancer.

“As for mum, I am very proud of her. She is not letting it get her down. Her sense of humour is getting it through it.”

Anyone wishing to sponsor Tracy can contact her at her taxi firm, Smith Taxis, on 01684 568686 or 01684 561015.
