Ironic rage

IT’S nice to see people being passionate about a cause they believe in, and the supermarket debate has certainly brought out a lot of passion on both sides of the fence.

There is a fine line to walk however, and it’s one I feel may have been overstepped in town on Saturday.

In between my visits of several town centre businesses to purchase some of their refreshing hop-based beverages, I was accosted by a person opposing the new superstore plans, who seemed very ‘passionate’ to say the least.

The term ‘venomous rage’ may be an understatement.

I found it ironic that a person trying to convince the local populace to make use of the beauty and pleasantness of the town centre, would go about it by angrily shouting at them in the middle of the street on a busy Saturday.

My name is Valerie McLean. I have been campaigning against the Out of Town Superstore plan since the beginning of this affair. I want to ask Keir Price when and where this event took place. This is a slur on our good name. I have been treated with courtesy by most of those opposing us, but also shouted at and insulted by some supporters of the Out of Town Superstore. I I have never retaliated because I can put up with it and prefer to find a way to get on with others in the community.
I have regularly been in the Market Place with others collecting signatures - where the market traders, shop keepers and passers-by are well aware of our conduct and can support us when we I say that at no time have I, or any other LOTS member campaigning with me insulted a member of the public.

Oh dear, sorry to hear that Kier. Not nice when they use such tactics.

I hope it did not put you off our lovely town.

Keir,

I’d like to state that I read your letter when it was printed in the paper last week and was upset by the contents. It is disgraceful that some people can behave in such a manner. The day after your letter was printed, LEdbury Supports Sainsbury’s (LESS) had to call the police out to an incident that had happened in town whilst they collected signatures. This is still under investigation so cannot be commented on further.

Ms McClean you stated that you have been abused by LESS, yet it did not deter you from engaging in conversation and stood amongst the LESS supporters one Saturday for around 30 minutes. Were you abused then? I’d also like to take this opportunity to ask if you had paid the council to “regularly be in the Market Place collecting signatures”?

Im Deborah Baker from the LESS group and find it quite sad that you were treated in such a manner Kier.

I do have to laugh at the next comment though, as it seems very much a one way thing, they can accuse us, but don't like it back.

Oh, and according to the council you cannot stand under the market house to collect anything as it is a designated market area, which is why they were removed from the area after complaints by some of the market traders last week.

And just incase LESS have any other accusations, I have a email from the Daily Mail stating its not LESS who are going round abusing people, as Quentinn Letts has said that its has been reported to him that it is those dressed in orange t shirts that are the ones who are doing this.

Feel free to contact me if you would like a copy of this.

Thanks.

Hello Domestic Lady
No ......in fact .. my experience is that I have been treated with courtesy by Colin Marcshall on several occasions although we certainly disagree about the Superstore issue. In fact..why not ask him how we relate to one another? I even had a chat with Yvonne White about all kinds of things when she and her daughter were going around Town with balloons etc. by H.S.B.C on the same day that you saw me having a chat with Colin Marcshall. It is beyond my comprehension why people should be so unpleasant to one another. I am disturbed by Mr Price's accusation because I have not seen or heard any abuse from LOTS supporters when they have been collecting signatures. But I have the evidence of abuse directed at me and will show you if you wish to contact me. Why not come around for a cup of tea and I will show you evidence on my computer ? I would rather that we just tried to get along. I do not wish to fall out with anyone about a Supermarket !! We are all part of Ledbury community.

I forgot to say that we do not need to pay anything to stand in the Market Place ..in fact we have never stood under the actual Market Hall only by the Midland Bank or by the Fish /Cheese stall with the full support of the traders involved. When/who was asked to move on ?

Domestic Lady and Ledbury Reporter

Mr Marschall will tell you that your accusations about the police incident are ill-advised.

Im Kier Price. Im not anything to do with LESS or any PR team. Its not a conspiracy. Diana wasnt murdered, and the royal family are not shapeshifting lizards.
I'll probably upset you ALL by telling you that I dont care about sainsburys either way.
I just dont like being shouted at for not signing something i didnt want to sign while Im walking through town. If it was LESS, i would have done the same.

Valerie. It happened not last saturday, the saturday before. Last saturday I did speak to a lady by HSBC opposing the plans, who was friendly, calm, and courteous. If that was you, well done. Thats how it should be done.

Glad thats all cleared up.

Mr Hadley's response is a crude attempt to discredit a person with no connections with the LESS group and as stated on numerous occasions the LESS group are not being run by a PR comapany. I call on Mr Hadley to provide proof positive of his accusations or refrain from displaying them in this un-required public manner. I would also add that GVA Grimley who produced the independant report also produce these types of report in favour of Tesco developments .. and for that I have proof.
To this date only one official complaint to the police has been made about verbal abuse and that was made by the LESS group against a person with obvious anti connections.

I will further add that if ANY member of the LOTS group have proof of being verbally abused in the street they should contact the police and report it. If the allegation is found to be true and that person is found to be a member of the LESS group we will co-operate fully with the investigation. While a number of comments have been posted on our open FB page we have tried very hard to delete them and advise the person that it is not acceptable, however as the majority of our Admins work full time these comments may not be removed for several hours.

To Mrs McClean I say that I have had a number of pleasnt conversations with you on the supermarket issue and, as you say, we agree to disagree.

I live in Ledbury and have not yet been approached by a LOTS supporter, even though I have given them eye contact on several occasions.

However I did post my opinion on the debate on their facebook page to which my comment was deleted, I was blocked from the site and told to "go away" and I "wasnt welcome". Further investigation finds that following my comment a number of derogatory and offensive comments were made in reference to me.

So I therefore 100% agree with the comments that Kier has made as I have had a similar unpleasant experience with LOTS myself.
