NOW that it has been confirmed that the Weatherspoon circus is soon to arrive in Ledbury are we able to presume that the well oiled machinery of the antisupermarket campaigners will swing their weight behind a protest on this development.

Ledbury is blessed with unique and individual shops and pubs and Weatherspoon’s does for small pubs what Tesco does to small shops – eventually they become rundown due to cash flow problems and fall into the hands of unsuitable people.

The town council recently turned down an application for an upmarket cafe in the old cinema on the basis that we must protect the cafes we have, which in an age of free enterprise seems bizarre.
