Traffic speed restrictions

AS a cyclist (and motorist) who regularly turns right from Albert Park Road in to Worcester Road, I was frightened, shocked, and saddened by the report of a cyclist seriously injured at this junction.

Without obviously knowing the precise circumstances of this double accident', I would strongly suggest that the speed of the second car involved could be a significant factor. Had the driver been travelling more slowly, or indeed at 20mph, this man's injuries may have been far less severe, or not even have occurred at all. Many communities are now actively considering 20mph zones in residential areas, and Portsmouth is the first UK city to be planning a city wide 20mph limit in residential zones (see www.brake.org.uk). Malvern is ideally placed for such a move, as we live in a community where there is no need to rush.

All local motorists, myself included, should think twice about the serious injuries to this cyclist, before putting their foot down for a little extra speed, which could so easily make the difference between life and death. Let us all wish this cyclist a good recovery.

JULIAN BROWN, Albert Park Road, Malvern.
