IT was most gratifying to read your article in the Malvern Gazette of November 30 that discussions were beginning on the redevelopment of the Malvern Post Office site. Many of your ardent readers have for years, seen the potential of this site - see letters in your paper circa April 04. They have been watching the progress of various bodies such as (1) GMAT - associations of traders (2) TCP - town centre partnership and the latest (3) Civic Trust - high st Malvern. All have been involved in town centre development for some time but without much co-ordination. At last, your article published on November 30 would appear to be saying what we have all been saying namely, use the Post Office site as a means of co-ordinating all town centre development.
The new centre should incorporate all the ideas being bandied about at the moment such as (a) new PO Country Service (2) modern flexible market centre (3) night club (4) music and talent centre (5) day restaurant (6) genealogy centre and many other most of which are confidential. There is an urgent need to write a requirements document for the building incorporating the above and including living and funding possibilities. This document can be written by a consultant or a group of trusted independent volunteers. The document would be the basis for inviting interested developers to submit alternative proposals.
No more time must be wasted. I suggest the requirements document should be ready within six months. The Post Office management must be informed of the Council's determination in this matter.
