AN article in last week's Ledbury Reporter stated that Wellington Heath Walkers Group and the parish council had "won a battle" to get Herefordshire Council to provide a "safe walking route" from the village to Ledbury town centre. This statement is inaccurate and fanciful.
Your article seems to have been based on a press release from Herefordshire Council's public relations department's Alison Grange. The press release was a very distorted account of conversations between Alison Grange, myself and others on the upgrading of an existing right of way.
This improved footpath via muddy fields and steep grass hills is not and can never be the safe walking route desired by those living in Wellington Heath. Nobody except ramblers dressed for walking in the countryside would attempt this route. It cannot be used by people with push chairs or wheelchairs, contrary to the county council's assertion in its press release.
We want a safe walking route along or near the road to Ledbury. This very dangerous stretch of road has no protection for pedestrians and unless the county council funds improvements, an accident is bound to happen.
So no trying to fob us off with froth about safely walking through mud and orchards please!
Patrick Adams, chairman, Wellington Heath Parish Council.
