LIKE Martin Read (Your Letters, September 14), I am normally very much in favour of hedges. However, I am extremely pleased that the hedge at the front of the library is to go.
The bulk of the hedge takes up a good proportion of the width of the pavement. Two people cannot walk side by side in comfort, and if a pushchair comes along, it is almost impossible to pass without stepping into the road. Graham Road is very busy just there.
I hope the wall and railings will be put as far back as possible, to enable the footpath to be widened a little further. These railings will, I expect, be made to match the similar walls and railings along Graham Road. It will be good to open up the view of the library and War Memorial.
Walking along there, my teenage granddaughter moved close to the edge to allow a pushchair to pass, and got whacked on the hand by the wing mirror of a passing car. It broke a bone in her thumb. The time for cutting hedges is approaching. Pedestrians would be delighted if hedges bordering pavement everywhere could be cut well back to allow us a little more space.
