IT is sad that Charles Eden (Your Letters, August 31) besmirches his otherwise reasonable campaign by encouraging illegal, surreptitious and dangerous actions. Such support will lose him sympathy and harm his efforts.
Mr Eden's friends who placed the protest banners on the scaffolding on the spire of Christ Church did so by breaking and entering. They then committed trespass and criminal damage, even theft, by removing a boss which is for securing the weather vane and attached to the lightning conductor, and then throwing the heavy, spiked boss to the ground. If it had hit anyone, it could have killed them. They were obviously aware of the illegal and dangerous nature of their actions by their secrecy and anonymity, working at night. Such behaviour should not be encouraged by responsible people and isn't likely to inspire support from churches.
As we are attempting to raise £90 - £100k towards repairing the spire, Mr Eden and his anonymous friends might like to give a generous donation towards our appeal to make up for their actions and the distress caused. Cheques should be made payable to Christ Church PCC.
The Rev. Peter Furber, Christ Church Road, Malvern.
