AS I am unable to go to my nearest hustings event in Christchurch, I went over to Hanley to see and hear the candidates that are asking for my vote. And very revealing it was too.

I was particularly struck by Conservative candidate Harriett Baldwin's frustration at the length of time the planning inspector was taking to approve the South Worcestershire Development Plan.

Very laudable, except that she neatly omitted the fact that it was her government that set up this undemocratic and laborious process in the first place, and introduced the requirement of presumption in favour of development that created the very situation that has led to a raft of unsuitable developments.

It was also noticeable that she was the only candidate not to condemn the Conservative district councillors who have put their own land forward for development.

It rather shows how completely out of touch she is with the feelings of Malvern residents.
