I HAVE been disappointed to read of the limited and faint-hearted proposal made by Malvern For All with regard to the installation of a cable car up the eastern side of the Malvern Hills.

Surely a much bolder, more imaginative vision is required.

If we look at a map of the district, we can see that the M5 motorway passes by north and south some distance east of the Rhydd and Guarlford.

A new motorway exit and a bridge thrown across the river Severn at that point would allow the construction of a six-lane motorway up the Guarlford Straight direct into Malvern with a concrete viaduct rising above the town as required and continuing up the eastern face of the hill until the motorway had risen to a height from which the summit could easily be accessed by car.

Better still, the summit of the Worcestershire Beacon could be mined and quarried to a lower level and the resulting material used for the construction of the road or sold off as building stone to property developers.

This would create a huge plateau at the summit of the hills to be used as a car park and motorists’ viewing area. Concessions could be sold to McDonald’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Starbucks and others and there could be an arcade with retail outlets, gaming machines and all those conveniences which the truly modern world simply can’t live without.

This, I feel, is the sort of vision which truly inhabits the minds of Malvern For All and I put forward this modest proposal for their consideration and approval.
