FOR decades I have been vaguely in favour of a cable car/rack railway for Malvern, not only as a tourist attraction but also to enable older and less able walkers to enjoy the dramatic views from the top of the hills.

However, I find myself concerned at the lack of thought that has gone into the current suggestion, which would not draw people into Great Malvern itself.

1. To hope that the Three Counties Showground will provide a park-and-ride looks good on the surface, but what about days when the showground has quite enough of its own custom to deal with? Will the park-and-ride be out of commission for three days at a time for the major shows?

2. The computer-generated view of the Wells Road with bus bay and ample width of road remaining for traffic is a fiction: tons of hillside would have to be excavated away, and even then the entirety of on-road parking on Wells Road would have to be sacrificed.

3. Any more bright ideas – such as turning Edith Walk into multi-storey parking, with the ensuing chaos to town traffic/parking – would need to be closely examined by the local shops and businesses to ensure that their trade would not be damaged further.
