REGARDING 'Cycling danger' (Gazette, January 9), a letter that complained about the “irresponsible” and “selfish” behaviour of a group of cyclists.

Surely cyclists have as much right to be on the roads as motorists, and drivers need to be patient in waiting for a safe place to pass, especially in poor weather?

Malvern Hills District Council has a policy to encourage more journeys to be made by pedestrians and cyclists which it describes as “essentially sustainable modes of travel”. Whilst the council should do its bit in ensuring development proposals take cycling seriously, many more cyclists will be encouraged to take to the road if they are confident that drivers will put safety before the irritation of a few minutes added to their journey.

On a recent visit to the USA, I was impressed by the courtesy of drivers in always giving priority to pedestrians and cyclists.

If they can do it, why can’t we?
