Malvern Hills District Council have released a video, Becoming a Councillor.

It features only four of the 38 councillors.

Roger Cousins describes all he has done for Welland.

Barbara Williams has much to say about the benefits to the community of councillors' work.

David Hughes is keen to stress that councillors provide the direction and then the officers show him how it can be done.

Melanie Baker highlights how important it is for councillors to be approachable.

Once I had picked myself up from the floor at the shock of their audacity the irony kicked in.

No mention of the 21 houses Cllr Hughes is trying to build in Alfrick, the 50 houses Cllr Cousins has planning permission for, nor the 50 more in the pipeline.

No mention of the £10,000 raised by residents to fight his planning application.

Cllr Williams made no mention of the 48 houses her partner is having built in Clifton upon Teme.

This trio was topped off by Cllr Melanie Baker who is overseeing all bar one of these developments.

In my opinion it may not be illegal for a councillor to build a housing estate on their land, but it is certainly immoral and unethical.

As for the importance of having an accessible councillor, I think those in Welland, Clifton, Leigh Sinton and Alfrick will be able to tell you how having a property developer for your councillor makes them inaccessible and deeply unpopular.

Promoting becoming a councillor using only the property-developing Conservative councillors is just a smack in the face for us residents.

Unless, of course, this is the Conservative selling point to attract new councillors.
