IT was refreshing to read in the Gazette (November 21) of parish councillors' support for the Upper Welland Action Group and Tom Wells' support for transparency in public expenditure, the more so in the light of your editorial about a political vacuum in the police and crime commissioner arena.

If politicians and elected officials at all levels are genuinely concerned about public confidence and trust, the first question they should always ask themselves is whether the processes they are applying – be they confidential pink-paper procedures or Whitehall guidance to apply planning procedures in favour of developers – are truly in the public interest.

Tom Wells is absolutely right: we elect representatives to serve us. All too often it doesn't feel like that.
