I AM interested to see more letters about the extremely difficult parking situation in parts of Malvern and to read the county highways department’s brush-off of the residents of Richmond Road.

Several streets in the town are virtually one-way now, managing only by the goodwill and courtesy of drivers to avoid total gridlock, though sometimes there are also temporary full stops.

I feel that there is scope for more people to park off the road on their own properties but also the use of one-way systems is becoming more urgently required.

It is ironic that the highways people thought that Richmond Road is all right as it is and capable of absorbing a bit more traffic and parking.

Had they had the sense to make the tree-growing areas along the pavements into parking bays instead of choosing to tarmac those areas many years ago, the road would be vastly more user-friendly now.

In fact, it is just another of our unofficial one-way streets for most of its length.

erhaps it is still not too late to improve the road’s design: the pavements are huge.

I propose the introduction of parking charges along busy streets and bus routes, in the same way as most towns now do, where there is limited space for traffic.

Perhaps then it would encourage some residents to widen their gateposts, park off the road and make the town less of a mess.

Frankly, I think that some of the places chosen by motorists to park their cars, such as on bends, hill crests, at corners and outside shops, despite the fact that we have all studied the Highway Code, are little short of anti-social!
