I WAS delighted to read in today’s Ledbury Reporter that Herefordshire Council is to instruct its contractors, Balfour Beatty, to start to repair the many potholes in the county.
Here in Ledbury this action is long overdue – surely no one can drive through the Lower Road Trading Estate without hitting some of them.
However, to learn that such repairs are to be at the expense of bin emptying and grass-cutting just astounds me.
Here in New Mills, the grass on the verges is at least six inches high in places and the accompanying mammoth crop of dandelions is just starting to seed, ensuring its numbers are multiplied many-fold in future.
I think I am correct in saying that the grass has been “cut” once in 2014 – very early on in the year when the ground was saturated. The result was an unbelievable mess.
Since then, although we have enjoyed weeks of dry weather, when grass should be cut, Balfour Beatty have been conspicuous by their absence.
Here in Frost Road and Auden Crescent responsible house owners regularly cut the verges in front of their properties, but no one lives in New Mills Way, so the grass and weeds flourish.
Hereford Council’s expertise would appear to be cutting. The exceptions being grass and councillors’ expense payments.
