I WRITE in response to Mr Richards’ view in the Malvern Gazette on east Europeans who have chosen to live in the UK.

Perhaps he would like us to take his ideas further and repatriate every immigrant?

We can start with those from the Commonwealth countries who, it has to be said, have a bit of a cheek wanting to come over here when for centuries the British Empire kept them subjugated by military rule while plundering much of their natural wealth.

What about the Jews who fled the gas chambers, the Protestants who escaped religious persecution in the 15th and 16th centuries, the Flemish and Walloons in the 13th century and many other periods of migration?

Perhaps Mr Richards would like to ship them back, which shouldn’t be too difficult now with EasyJet flying to so many European airports.

Now we’re getting into the swing of things. Out go the Normans (Frenchies you know, what more can I say), the Danes and Norwegians, who first pillaged and then settled in much of northern England.

We can put them all on a North Sea ferry. And then, of course, the Romans.

And what, may I ask, did the Romans ever do for us?

Finally, we have the Anglo Saxons, as British as you can get, surely. Sorry; they came from Sweden, Holland and of all places Germany.

But I’m in a generous mood and we’ll let Mr Richards stay. Trouble is there’s no one left – except our east European friends – those hard-working, friendly and culturally rich bunch they are who are only too happy to do those important jobs that keep this country going.
