Sad day indeed
6:20pm Monday 28th October 2013 in Letters
LAST Thursday was a sad day for local democracy.
Only one of our county councillors (John Raine) respected the wishes of the local community and supported the 1,000-plus signature petition presented to the county council in an attempt to prevent the sale of land behind Malvern Cube and preserve it for community use.
One abstained while the other two voted against it.
It was left to 22 other councillors, not representing Malvern, to support the petition.
If the Malvern councillors had voted for the petition the land would now be safe.
Their vote also flew in the face of the Malvern Hills planning officers who had already refused planning permission for the proposed development on the land.
Surely we are entitled to expect our locally elected Malvern representatives to give precedence to the interests of their community instead of slavishly toeing the party line. Obviously Malvern needs more independently minded county councillors than we have at present.
DR DAVID JAMES Malvern
