THOSE who doubt the folly of MHDC’s decision to privatise its Revs and Benefits Service, and it seemingly lining up waste collection for a similar move (with responsibility for development control being diluted by becoming a shared service), need look no further than West Malvern, and the ongoing saga of the roll-out of superfast broadband (or rather, the repeated failure of the telecoms giant to do so after promising so much).
This shows how little democratic accountability and control is left when vital public assets are flogged to the private sector to fill a short term hole in the budget, and how the needs of the users of the service are no longer paramount.
