THE real issue about new housing proposals is never confronted.
Why does an inspector decide to allow housing development? Because he knows we must tackle a national shortage of housing for sale and rent.
Why does Festival Homes want to build new homes on its Pickersleigh site?
Because it needs to house as many as possible local people needing social or affordable housing.
A Pickersleigh councillor acknowledges this need but claims “there are lots and lots of other areas that could be used”.
Maybe so, but I’d bet every one of them would produce a protest campaign, backed by the local ward councillor.
Wouldn’t it make a change for the Gazette to run some stories about how difficult it is for local young people to enter the property-owning market, or about the plight of those who cannot get an offer of much needed social housing?
