Road is disgrace

WELL done Martin Smith for highlighting the state of Woodleigh Road in last week’s issue.
The road is a disgrace. His remarks concerning the state of that particular road can be reiterated for much of Ledbury’s highways and footpaths.
Long before any development of the town centre is considered some action is needed to repair surfaces throughout the town’s central area.
Underfoot, the town looks very shabby indeed.
I have a long association with Ledbury but live outside the town now.
However, I regularly visit both Ledbury and Ross-on Wye and the thing that always strikes me is that, by comparison, Ross highways and footpaths, in the central area at least, are in a much better state overall.
Everyone knows that money is in short supply and the cost of road repairs is high but my question is why should there be this significant difference when both towns are in the same county and have been subject to the same budget over the years?
I get the feeling Ledbury highway maintenance has been sidelined by the county over a long period of time.
It is a very important tourist town but, that apart, the residents, very many of whom are elderly, deserve better upkeep, especially of the footpaths.
Perhaps I am wrong, as it is my perception rather than a detailed survey, but the dreadful state of Woodleigh Road is a fact.
