Well done LADS

THE Ledbury Amateur Dramatic Society’s recent production of Lark Rise was staged last week in Ledbury’s beautiful Walled Garden.
I sat among the trees and watched with increasing delight as the drama unfolded.
A superb band of musicians led by Sheila Thackwray accompanied the talented actors ranging in age from 10 years old to those well past retirement.
Period costumes and props created a realistic snapshot of a bygone age.
So vivid was the scene before us that it could well have been a slice of Ledbury’s own rural past.
The rough, bawdy farmworkers and their busy, gossiping wives were our neighbours, our friends, who laughed, cried, danced and sang, for us and with us.
As dusk fell our spines tingled as the names of the fallen from the First World War were read out.
Then came the final, joyous dancing, the audience joining the cast in a vigorous burst of energy!
The ensemble work by cast and crew was a triumph of hard work and harmony and a tribute to the director, Shirley Lewis, whose vision this was.
Three tiny children sat alongside me all evening – spellbound.
We had all been totally enchanted.
