Drain shame

IN response to the story on the old church storm drain, I want to say what a waste.

With councils shouting out that they have little cash to spare it seems a lot of expense is going to be used to cover a drain that’s been in existence for more than a century or more without someone going out oftheir way to fall in it.

The drain in the ledbury church yard takes the overflow from the Grammar school lake (as we know it).

The proper name, I believe, was Martins Pond or Lake.

As kids in the late 40s and early 50s, we would get in the drain to catch Tadpoles (no Elf and Safety then) so its not been hidden away for long.

As to the lake and surrounding grounds these have been badly neglected.

Ifthe resources were available the area could be turned into a wonderful attraction for the town.

A scheme to fill in the lake and turn the area into sports facilties was made in the 1970s by Mr T A Neal, headmaster ofthe Grammar School, butthe cost of £36,000 ruled this out.I would notlike to guess the price today.
