Dispelling myths
8:47am Tuesday 5th March 2013 in Letters
WITH so much confusion surrounding the introduction of wheelie bins, I would like to dispel a few myths: There is no requirement under either UK or EU law for kerbside collections of glass; the 2008 EU Waste Directive requires councils to have separate collections of glass, metal, plastic and paper by 2015; UK and EU funded programmes have concluded that commingled collections are more expensive and less environmentally friendly than separate stream collections; DEFRA has been forced to remove guidance that favoured commingling; DEFRA’s guidance is still the subject of a judicial review, which may result in commingled collections being deemed illegal.
I wonder, therefore, how councillors and officers can still recommend commingling as the best and most cost-effective option.
