Lights a waste

I NOTICED tucked away on page 19 of the Malvern Gazette in News in Brief that Upton Town Council have increased the precept by two per cent – despite the Government’s call for no increase.

I am on a fixed income and any increase is very hard to cope with. What really annoys me is that the same council gave away £25,000 to the Tourism and Trade Association to replace existing Christmas lights and erect a Christmas tree that cost £3070.

What a waste! If this had not been done, there would have been no need for any increase at all.

I never get to page 19. The thoroughly dull sanitisation of news exercised by the Gazette usually means I've fallen asleep on the bog reading about Mrs Jones 100th Birthday by the time I get through page 2.
