IN my letter last week the edited version gave the impression that I thought commingled recycling was fine.
I do not. It is by far the worst way to recycle.Yes, it is easy ,we just throw everything in together.
But up to 20 per cent of this recycling will be sent to landfill as it is contaminated.
The glass, for example, will end up as road aggregate and will not save our resources or reduce energy consumption because it needs to be pure to be melted down for glass again.
By separating waste streams at the kerb side not only do councils get a better revenue for the waste when it is sold on but they are providing suppliers with high quality recycled materials and helping to protect the environment.
Our council did not consider boxes and separate waste streams, it only ever wanted wheelie bins.
They may increase their recycling rates but they are not really helping to recycle.
