I UNDERSTAND the war memorial on the High Street in Ledbury is to be refurbished prior to the 100th Anniversary in 2014 of the outbreak of the Great War.

But I gather the town council is considering discarding the four “stone blocks” on the corners of the base.

To discard parts of the war memorial cannot be right. Admittedly, they serve no particular purpose at present, but we are bound to discover their original and intended use.

I propose the corner blocks are cemented into position; and that each is enhanced with an imitation “eternal torch flame” in metal, commissioned by a local craftsman and fitted into the recess of each block.

We have fine local craftsmen who could undertake such a commission and I have suggested to the council and the Civic Society that they should pursue this idea.
