The Embroidery Group and History Group recently went for a combined visit to The Forge Mill Museum Redditch, organised by Denise Fereday. The museum was very interesting and we saw how the needles, fishing hooks etc. were manufactured in the past. We also saw the craft exhibition and later had a tasty lunch at the Jinny Ring. It was a very enjoyable day.

Our October meeting was an open meeting fundraiser for Guide Dogs for the Blind, which was very well attended by members and guests. We had three speakers, Ann, Richard, and Shirley who is partially sighted, so we were given a comprehensive account from all sides. We learned how the dogs progress from puppy training into fully - trained guide dogs in two years and were amazed to learn that the lifetime cost of each guide dog is around £53,000! There is no funding from the government so it is all obtained from donations. Each dog is “in service” for around seven years. Dogs that do not make the grade may become “buddy dogs” and make invaluable companions for autistic children, for instance.

Shirley gave a poignant insight into her reaction to losing her sight at a young age and how she regained her independence after deciding to apply for a Guide Dog. After being matched up with Taylor and both being trained together for two years she recovered her confidence.

Three of the dogs came to our meeting. In addition to Taylor, Jean brought along seven-month old Henley and Yola completed the trio. They were very well-behaved. Yola was amusing in that every time Richard mentioned “Walk” in his presentation Yola let out a howl – obviously understanding what he was talking about! It was an extremely informative and enjoyable evening. We held a Tombola and raised a goodly sum to swell their coffers, so thanks to all who came and supported this very worth-while charity.

Our next meeting is on November 1 when Avril Pulley will give a demonstration of sugar craft.
