THE first talk of the season’s programme was given by Fred Clark, who spent thirty years as the Police Officer on the Falkland Islands. His subject was “ The birdlife of the islands” and a fascinating subject it certainly was! The variety of species and the details of the fight for survival in that remote environment captivated his audience. Many of the species are amazingly fearless of human contact, permitting close encounters and wonderful photography. The constant fight for survival in the extreme climatic conditions and the techniques employed by the birds to safeguard their nests and their offspring were brought to life for us in Mr. Clark’s stunning pictures. The care and protection ensured by the residents have some salient lessons for other, less-caring societies. The audience was most appreciative of the insight we were given and I hope to arrange another visit from Mr. Clark, when we can learn more about this remote outpost of our country.

The next talk will be on 28 October and will be given by Nick Humphries. His subject is Chedworth Roman Villa, near Cirencester. It is many years since I visited the villa and apparently facilities there have much improved, with the addition of a Visitor Centre which also houses a display of artefacts discovered at the site. As usual, the talk will be at 7.30pm in the Burgage Hall in Church Lane and visitors will be welcome to join us.
