The Route to the Hills is a half million-pound District Council Lottery funded project to increase the number of visitors who come to Malvern; the Lottery grant was approved in 2015 and the project is expected to last three years. It is being co-ordinated by a committee of representatives from the wider community.

The project is divided into two parts – the hardware – the installation of directions and signage on a route from Great Malvern Station to Rose Bank Gardens and the software – the community involvement to support the project.

Katy Wade is the Community and Engagement Officer responsible for the community involvement and visited Lunch Box on Thursday 8th September to outline her responsibilities.

The jewel in the crown of any visitor experience to the town is, of course, the Priory – the centre of pilgrimage and support of the community over the past nine hundred years and it is hoped that Priory involvement in the project will enhance the project and the Priory’s role in the community.

Katy explained the route from the station to the top of the town and the fact that it was not possible to include all features of historical interest; the concept is to walk visitors through the town and other places of interest can be signposted.

The route will be marked out with pavement markers assisted by information boards; full use will be made of digital techniques to allow the use of smartphones.

Much of Katy’s work will be the provision of supporting material, ranging from a children’s book - ‘Explore Malvern’s History’ to full web based historical information. This work has already started with a Treasure Hunt leaflet produced in conjunction with Malvern Museum for Civic Week.

Katy is also involved with local schools and has recruited a number of volunteers to help her. She is very keen to hear from any individuals and organisation who would like to contribute.
