In August each year Ledbury W.I ‘celebrates summer’ by meeting for afternoon tea prepared and served by our President Margaret Coulson and the committee.

Margaret welcomed our guest June Stevens, Ledbury’s Federation advisor, and all members.

The speaker Malcolm Watkins was introduced and spoke about the Roberts brothers and their company Glevum Games which was formed in Gloucester in the 1890’s. Glevum became the leading inventor and manufacturer of toys and games in Britain and their products were exported throughout the then British Empire.

Afternoon tea was then served on flowery tablecloths and with tiered cake stands laden with savouries, cakes and biscuits. And, of course, tea or coffee. Very traditional and sociable and enjoyed by all.

After tea, posies were presented to members with birthdays during August.

Later June Stevens outlined the structure of the WI for the benefit of newer members.

Elaine Toyer gave information about the work of the Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW), an organisation supported by the WI and other women led societies and groups. Money raised is used to encourage women to exercise more power, to make better decisions and to change their lives for the better.

The afternoon’s competition was for a favourite toy or game and members brought along some delightful and well-loved treasures, first prize going to a pretty little doll.

The next meeting is at 7.30 pm Wednesday 14 September at the Parish Room of the Catholic Church New Street Ledbury HR8 2EE when our speaker will be Mary Stewart – ‘Shreds and Patches’

Visitors are always very welcome.
